Voted 1st Place for Best Afterschool Program 2016 by Severna Park Voice, EcoAdventures' Eco Explorer After School Club offers a fun-filled program for grades K-8, starting August 22nd through the last day of school.
In each excitement-filled 8 week session, students will enjoy a variety of hands-on FUN activities that are guaranteed to blow their minds, from animal interactions, to games, hikes, some field trips, experiments, crafts and more. Daily lessons include animal care and husbandry, animal training and enrichment, public speaking, research tactics, program planning, team building, and leadership.
Themes for this session include (may not be in this order):
Island Adventure
Your boat sank…and you are left on a deserted island… what would you do? How would you survive? You are already an Eco-Explorer now earn your badge as an Island Explorer. Learn some island survival skills where you break up into groups and discuss survival techniques. Learn about coral reefs and how islands created? Go around the globe and learn about some of the most famous Islands. What about those wacky animals in Madagascar? from chameleons to lemurs….Australia with some of the most deadliest animals on the planet and the Galapagos Islands with a marine biologist’s’ paradise. Is Easter island really where the Easter bunny comes from? Cocos Island really where Jurassic Park was filmed? Learn about famous pirates, stories, cultures and people that have inhabited these mysterious islands. Make Native masks, even an erupting volcano! Try some tropical fruits…take advantage of the weather on Water Wednesday and play some island games like Limbo and Summer is not quite over yet with our Island Explorer adventure week.
Marine Biology Week
Dive into the deep blue sea this week! EcoExplorers are forewarned: you are about to enter the SPLASH zone! Each day will feature unique ecosystems and animals that inhabit the sea. For Maryland Day, we will explore the Chesapeake with blue crabs, horseshoe crabs, oysters and our terrapins. Another day, you will get a chance to go crabbing and seining. You can’t have a sea camp without SHARKS! On Ocean Day, campers will explore the fascinating world of sharks, reefs and ocean ecosystems. Campers will make their own shark tooth necklaces. You’ll take a big BITE of fun on this day! Marine Animal Rescue Day will astound as kids perform a dolphin mock rescue and meet our rescued animals. Go back millions of year ago and learn about sarcosuchus an extinct giant crocodile the size of a school bus, that lived 112 million years ago, ancient sea turtles, marine mammals and more! Try your luck in our fossil dig area and sleuth to look for some cool ancient marine invertebrates, gems, and shark teeth. As always, meet some of their modern day animal relatives. Eco Explorers will also make Ocean in a Jar to take home!
Animal Olympics
READY, SET, GO… Summer Olympics is over now it is your turn to show us what you got- Do you think you can kick, bite, jump, and pull? How do stack up against the best? Now it’s your chance to prove it in this animal vs. kid smack down! How do you size up running against a Komodo Dragon? Can you hold your breath as long as a giant sea turtle? Pull as hard as a giant octopus, or bite as hard as a croc? How long can your throw? EcoAdventures will provide the outdoor and indoor Arena you bring the skills. It’s kids against beasts in a battle on the wild side. This is NO ordinary Olympics here at EcoAdventures. We will challenge you both physically and mentally. Do you have what it takes to lay down in cockroaches, eat bugs, race and alligator? We can’t wait to see who wins GOLD, SILVER or BRONZE! Make your own medals and learn and try some foods from all over the world.
Skin Deep
Whether its’ scales, fur, skin, feathers or shell…we’re going crazy about cover this week as we explore the different types of animal coverings. Which works best in the rain, how about the dry, or which do you want if it’s cold, or the best one if you’re being attacked?? Eco Explorers will explore in the ins and outs of of how each body covering is designed, its benefits, drawbacks, special skills, etc. Why do snakes shed their skin in one big piece but we don’t? How can frogs drink through their skin? How do tarantulas use their skin as a weapon? How can some animals change color? All questions will be answered in Skin Deep, so hold on tight for reptile vs fish, amphibian vs bird, mammal vs arachnid, it’s going to be an all out integument smackdown!!
Chow Down
Campers will get a mouthful as we dive into the world of diet. What does it mean to be a consumer or a producer, or what the heck is a Apex predator as opposed to an open pursuit predator?? Can you be a predator and prey??? And what about the “vores”…carnivore, herbivore, and omnivore…heck we got more vores at EcoAdventures than you can shake a stick at (oh and be careful…some of our animals will eat the stick!!) The how, why, and what, animals eat will be explored in this unit. Each of EcoAdventure’s animals will be analyzed as to what, how often, and when they eat. Did you know our giant snake Gigantor can go years without feeding, yet our opossum needs to eat almost constantly!! In the end, kids will come up with a menu for each ECO critter, culminating in an Animal Feast sure to please any palate!!!
Animal Theater
Animals are the basis of many ancient stories, plays, and even movies today. Did you ever imagine yourself on stage, becoming an actor/actress or working behind the stage with props or lights? Or becoming an animal trainer for the movies? How do they train bears to dance, and raccoons to fetch, puppies to “act”? Join us here at EcoAdventures as we learn about the world of animal theater, dance, and how animals are used on stage. We will work all week to put on an EcoAdventures story book, puppet show, dance, play or film a short video. Your choice as a creative director…which one will it be?
Creature Careers
Back by popular demand…So you want to work with animals do you?…well you’ve come to the right place. This week was designed for kids that want to find out more about jobs that involve working with animals. In addition to our excellent staff, we will bring in experts from different fields to talk to Eco Explorers about what their jobs are all about Naturalist from Howard County Nature Center will bring birds of prey. Meet with our animal care staff- kids will get a day training animals, learning about animal care and husbandry, assist with feeding animals, and help set up a tank. Make an enrichment toy for our animals, present it to them and see what happens… From +Each profession discussed will be accompanied by lots of hands-on encounters, demonstrations, live animals, props, crafts, and more. Ignite your passion for a career with creatures!
Goin’ Green
Are you going green? What do you know about an ordinary plastic bottle? Do you have a rain barrell on the side of your house or solar panels on the roof of your house? During this week you’ll learn all about how to go green and how you can go green in your own home! We will also learn about to make different things “green” such as having our own recycled art contest or having our own “green” food taste test! Bring recyclable items all week and watch us turn trash…into treasures!
