This summer, let your kids get their hands into some mud and explore their inner artist at Baltimore Clayworks!

Campers will indulge their creativity through the exciting medium of clay, exploring textures and a variety of ceramic techniques used through the ages! Whether hand-building, sculpting, or on the potter's wheel, small classes guarantee that every camper receives plenty of individual attention. Each student is sure to leave excited about exploring their creative side and proud of their creations!
 

 

2017 Themed Camp Weeks:

June 19 - 23: Up your Game!

  • Campers will design, strategize, and build their own board games! Using slabs, coils, and sculptural techniques, campers can recreate classic dice and checkerboard designs while also getting the chance to invent new concepts for games of their own design. 

June 26 - 30: Tell a Story with Greek Mythology (12,000 BC).

  • Through the exploration of Greek mythology and historic tales, campers will use a mixture of brainstorming techniques and group exercises to stretch their imagination in telling their own stories onto Greek style sculptures

July 3 - 7: Seat at the Dinner Table.

  • Campers will discover notable female artists such as Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, Judy Chicago and how powerful and passionate women are in their homes and in the arts! They will also make a clay projects dedicated to important women in their life. (mom, grandma, aunt, etc.). 

July 10 - 14: Flowing through the Ages: Art Nouveau (1890-1905).

  • This camp teaches children about 19th century Impressionism and how it shifts style and color into the more abstract. Campers can channel their inner Van Gogh though coil structure building and experimental glazing just as an Impressionist would in the 1800s! All it takes is pure imagination and self-expression. 

July 17 - 21: Got Soup? Exploration through Pop Art (1955-1970).

  • Campers will get creative in this funky camp class and discover the explosion of colors in pop art! As they learn the principles and techniques that artists like Warhol used, campers will engage with imagery and color choice that will inspire the strength in creating bold works of art. 

July 24 - 28: Breaking all the Rules: Cubism in Clay (1907-1922).

  • If your kids like breaking the rules, this class is for them! Campers who choose this class will have a chance to think like Pablo Picasso while learning about one of the coolest periods of the 20th Century. This cubism themed class encourages them to think outside the box and challenge the way they see shapes and texture. 

July 31 - August 4: Black Arts Movement (1965-1975).

  • All history buffs welcome to this class dedicated to the history of the Black Arts Movement! This day camp will cover influential artists like Augusta Savage to show campers the importance of meaningful symbols and images that they deeply relate to.  

August 7 - 11: Treasures Beneath the Soil: Fossils, Dinosaurs and Rocks/Jewels.

  • Campers will discover what amazing things one can learn about a culture through clay in this lesson designed to learn about the fun and exciting things found underground. Campers will create their own assortment of hand-built clay fossil and dinosaurs! 

August 14 - 18: Graffitti vs. Sgraffito (20th century).

  • Your child will be able to channel their decorative flair by learning the skills of carving and ornamentation through the techniques of sgraffito! This camp will offer insight into the historical tradition of sgraffito carvings, and the modern movement of graffiti and street art. 

August 21 - 25: Ancient Art.

  • Campers will experience the art of Ancient Egypt in this spectacular class that explores pharaohs, tombs, hieroglyphs, mummies, and more. Campers will become Egyptian experts using multiple hand-building methods to make an assortment of colorful reliefs, Egyptian tomb treasure boxes!

August 28 - September 1: The Power of Words.

  • Campers learn about the influence of word choice in the arts that is inspired by artists like Robert Indiana who showcase the importance of language. This ceramics camp will incorporate mosaics, teaching campers glass handling and clay assemblage while they create masterful pieces that incorporate words they find meaningful.
