Summer is here, bringing warmer weather, rest and relaxation, family vacations . . . and identity theft? Probably not the first thing that pops into your mind, but it’s true. While summer is the most carefree time of the year, it’s also likely you could be susceptible to identity theft, especially while traveling. Add kids and their devices into the mix, and you may be even more vulnerable.
So, when you think of “summer essentials”, identity theft protection should be right up there on your packing list with sunscreen and flip flops.
Help protect your identity on your summer travels with these tips from LifeLock. Get LifeLock for up to 25% Off Your First Year - Terms Apply.
Safeguard your mail. Put a hold on your mail while you’re gone or ask a neighbor to collect it. An overflowing mailbox could be a jackpot for an identity thief, particularly pre-approved credit card offers.
Limit use of public Wi-Fi. Identity thieves can monitor what you do on public Wi-Fi, even if it’s password protected. Not only can they see which websites you visit, but experienced thieves may also be able to capture your credentials when you log in to bank and credit card accounts while using public Wi-Fi.
Use cash or credit over debit or bank cards. Credit card companies are better equipped to handle fraud and will likely be able to quickly reverse or cover fraudulent charges.
Be cautious when using ATMs. Only withdraw cash from bank-run ATMs that are located inside or right outside the bank. Monitored ATMs with surveillance cameras make it more difficult for thieves to use skimmer devices.
Keep your devices password protected. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, a thief can easily access banking apps, social media accounts and other apps that contain your personal information if your device is not password protected.
Keep your personal information under lock and key. Leave anything you won't need during your travels at home, like social security cards, school and work IDs, and extra credit cards. Use your hotel safe to lock up passports, travel documents, and anything else that contains identifying information.
Keep quiet on social media. Broadcasting that you are away from home is an open invitation for thieves of all kinds, including identity thieves, that your home and accounts are more accessible.
