The Kennedy Center, the Freer and Sackler, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum invite you to join in celebrating the Lunar New Year across Washington, DC. The whole family can ring in the Year of the Rat with a variety of activities and performances.
 
The Kennedy Center – Lunar New Year Celebration
The Kennedy Center is pleased to continue their annual Lunar New Year celebration and ring in the Year of the Rat with showcases of Chinese and Korean culture. As their cornerstone event, Grammy Award®–winning artist Muhai Tang returns to the Kennedy Center to conduct the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra. The KC Chinese New Year Family Day returns Saturday, January 25. Enjoy free activities for all ages including arts and crafts, traditional costume photo booth, zodiac stickers, demonstrations of sugar painting and wood block printing, magic shows, and more. We are also presenting a special display of Winter Lanterns in recognition of the first winter season at the REACH.

Freer and Sackler – Lunar New Year (FREE!)
Sunday, January 26, 11 a.m.– 5 p.m.
 
Join the Freer and Sackler for their sixth annual Lunar New Year celebration to ring in the Year of the Rat. Enjoy food, performances, and art representing the richness of New Year celebrations in China, Korea, and Mongolia. Experience interactive art demonstrations, live magic and musical performances, and delicious food for sale. And enjoy two special Sackler exhibitions—Resound: Ancient Bells of China and Sacred Dedication: A Korean Buddhist Masterpiece—and the permanent collection of Asian art in the Freer. FREE

Smithsonian American Art Museum – Chinese New Year Family Celebration (FREE!)
Saturday, February 1, 11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.  
 
Celebrate the Lunar New Year with SAAM and the Chinese Embassy. Help ring in the Year of the Rat with a variety of performances and activities. Enjoy Chinese ribbon dancing, acrobatic yo-yo performances, and an interactive magic show. Artists from the city of Shenzhen demonstrate ink finger-printing, wood printing, and how to make hands-on shadow puppets and dough figurines.  Check out calligraphy demonstrations by the Confucius Institute at George Washington University, and paper cutting and envelope making with the Confucius Institute at George Mason University.  Go on an art scavenger hunt, create your own New Year craft, and enjoy delicious treats available for purchase at the

The Chinese New Year Family Festival is presented in partnership with Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Culture, Sports, Tourism, Radio and Television, and is part of the Lunar New Year DC celebration with Smithsonian American Art Museum, Freer and Sackler, and the Kennedy Center.
