Spark your son's curiosity and interest for the fascinating world of science! Discovery Science Camp is a science teacher-led excursion camp at The Heights School, an independent school for boys with a conveniently located and beautiful 29-acre wooded campus in Potomac, MD.

Discovery Science Camp is a program designed around uniquely engaging activities and hands-on experiences involving science. For the past 20 years, this camp - staffed exclusively by The Heights School's faculty and administrators - has accomplished more adventure in a few weeks than most camps accomplish in an entire summer.

This summer, Discovery Science Camp hopes to be able to accomplish some field trips in small groups of ten campers plus a faculty leader and staff member if conditions allow. Here is a sample of activities and trips that have been taken in past years:
  • A visit to the NASA Goddard Space Center with a special presentation on the space shuttle and chance to make and launch model rockets.
  • An in-depth study of ecosystems and The Chesapeake Bay, including a Visit to The Chesapeake Bay.
  • Dissection of a shark and a chance to study Marine Biology with help from marine specialists from the Baltimore Aquarium.   
  • A visit to the U.S. Naval Observatory Dome Telescope with a presentation on outer space.
  • A trip to the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum and a tour from an F-16 pilot.
  • The chance to explore the tiny, living world of microorganisms in pond water through the use of biology lab microscopes.
  • A trip to Luray Caverns and an opportunity to learn more about how caves form.
  • Behind the scenes tours of the Smithsonian Institute and a chance to have hands on lessons from scientists.
  • Learning about Natural History through hikes and expert guest speakers invited with animals such as falconry from a Falconer and reptiles from a Zoologist.
  • The traditional helicopter egg drop engineering contest, model building, and a chance to make ice cream as a prize.
  • Construction of giant water balloon catapults and cannons as a fun way to learn about Newtonian Physics.
  • Nature hikes that promote an understanding of Environmental Biology and the natural forces that shape our local environment, including visits to Cunningham Falls Park and the Catoctin Zoo and the Potomac River Valley.

Ages: Boys are grouped by grade with a teacher leading each group of nine campers, as follows:
  • Rising 2nd - 4th grade boys
  • Rising 5th - 6th grade boys
  • Rising 7th - 8th grade boys

Camp Hours:  9 a.m. - 3 p.m. daily (Some day trips will run longer than 3 p.m.)

  • Free Before Care (8:15 a.m.) and Free After Care (3-4 p.m.) available.

2021 Camp Sessions:  Come for one week, two weeks or all three weeks. Campers appreciate the continuity of attending more than one week - and every day of camp offers a unique experience. The more weeks attended, the more adventures and day trips enjoyed with a group of new friends and teacher leader.

What’s the Covid-19 adapted plan, if needed? Last summer (Summer 2020), Discovery Science Camp was able to successfully adapt its programming and continued to offer high quality, safe on-campus activities for campers. Having demonstrated the ability to adapt, the camp is confident it will be able to do the same again as needed in Summer 2021.
 
Camper enrollment will be smaller by design with excellent ratios of supervision (1:9) by full time teachers leading small groups, an emphasis on cleanliness, hand washing routines, considerate distancing, and the utilization of a large and beautiful outdoor/indoor campus. If field trips in small groups are not possible according to the current private school standards at the time, this camp will adapt by employing special on-campus activities that fully engage thematic science learning.
 
This camp personalizes the experience each camper receives so that each camper is guaranteed to have a hands-on and individualized experience of science every single day. For instance, in place of the field trip to NASA, last summer the camp offered a rotating on campus "Phun with Physics Day" fully complete with model rocket building and launching, quadcopter courses, learning about woodworking and the engineering of structures and buildings, building a tennis ball potato cannon, the traditional egg drop contest, understanding archery, and hosting a pilot as a guest speaker. 
 
In the weeks prior to this camp starting, the camp director will be in touch with the most ideal and detailed plans for each of the weeks. Buy with confidence, this camp stood behind every voucher sold last year, including offering voucher extensions without expiration!
