Often referred to as the TOMS Shoes of socks, Bombas co-founders, Randy Goldberg and David Heath, are the real deal. While working together at a lifestyle website, they came across a quote on Facebook from the Salvation Army that said that socks are the number one most requested clothing item at homeless shelters (yet among the least often donated). They describe that as their "light bulb moment," where they saw an opportunity to make a big impact on their communities through social entrepreneurship: A sock company with a higher purpose. For every pair of socks purchased, they donate one pair to the homeless community.
But Randy and David knew that in order to make the kind of impact they envisioned, they needed to sell a heck of a lot of socks. They became obsessed with reinventing and innovating a product they called an "afterthought" in the marketplace - so obsessed that they spent two full years in research and development before rolling out their new product line. They claim seven material improvements to the old school sock, including a seamless toe, moisture-wicking properties, and "Stay-Up Technology". And I have to admit, Bombas does make a pretty darn nice pair of socks. They are super comfy - the material is soft, just the right thickness, and stretchy with a honeycomb area around mid-sole that hugs your foot just right - and they come in lots of cool colors, designs and heights for women, men and kids.
You would think that the socks they donate would either be the same or, if anything, lower quality than the socks they sell to consumers. In fact, the exact opposite is true. Their donated socks are higher quality, reflecting the needs of the homeless communities they serve. They re-engineered their core product using darker colors so they don't show dirt and visible wear, reinforced all the seams for greater durability, and they use an anti-microbial treatment to help prevent the growth of fungus and irritation.
The name Bombas is derived from the Latin word for bumblebee. Bees live in a hive and work together to make the world a better place, and though they are small, they make a big impact on the world. To date, Bombas has donated more than 7 million pairs of socks to the homeless. The entire Bombas team also volunteers as a group at least three times a month at local homeless shelters or charities, staying continually connected with the communities they serve. Their slogan, "Bee Better" is knitted inside every pair of socks, reminding them of their dual mission to both make a superior product and better their communities.
