There's no reason to get your kid's head out of the clouds because now they can celebrate their birthday at the National Air and Space Museum surrounded by the most unique flight icons in the world! And why not celebrate your animal-loving child's birthday surrounded by the world's most impressive mammals -- yes, you read that right, they can also blow out their candles at the National Zoo!

If you're wondering why you haven't thought of this before, the answer is that it wasn't an option until now. On March 1st, the Smithsonian officially opened up their Museums for rent for private events, and most exciting for our readers, private youth events! Previously, the Smithsonian only permitted co-sponsored, corporate events hosted for donation. With this new policy, you can now host even a small-scale celebration at one of the Smithsonian's awesome museums!

The new policy is a three-year pilot program to help raise funds for the museums that make up the world's largest cultural organization. So start planning the party of your dreams now -- be it a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at The National Museum of American History, an artsy Sweet Sixteen at Renwick Gallery, or a birthday party at a kid favorite like the National Air and Space Museum or National Zoo.

Each Museum offers a variety of different rooms and locations to choose from. On the National Zoo's website they have a Friend's of the National Zoo (FONZ) birthday party page where they list out birthday packages including a zoo tour, a game room and goody bags. The Zoo offers a 16-20 guest occupancy, but for larger parties, they have the Reptile Discovery Center (75-200 maximum) and the Elephant Community Center (75-300 maximum).

At the National Air and Space Museum, you can chose from the Space Race Exhibit as your party backdrop or the Boeing Milestone of Flight Hall.

Here is a complete list of Smithsonian Museums available to rent for private youth events:

  • Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum (in New York)
  • Smithsonian American Art Museum
  • National Portrait Gallery
  • Freer and Sackler Galleries of Art
  • National Air and Space Museum (both the D.C. location and the Udvar Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va)
  • National Museum of African Art
  • National Museum of American History
  • National Museum of the American Indian (both the D.C. and New York locations)
  • The National Zoo
  • The Renwick Gallery

So what are you waiting for? Now's the time to make your child's birthday dream a reality!
